Attracting Hummingbirds

Here in Manitoba we only have one species of Hummingbird: Ruby-throated Hummingbird

We're lucky to have them visit for about 4 months of the year. Attracting Hummingbirds within the city limits can be a challenge, you may only see them on their journey further north or south when they stop for snacks in your yard. If you want to entice them to your yard try hanging a Hummingbird feeder but keep in mind the feeder must be cleaned and refreshed every 3-5 days. Bacteria growth in the nectar can be lethal to Hummingbirds. You can make your own nectar at home! 1 part sugar to 4 parts water-bring to a boil-cool-serve. White table sugar is best and no food colouring. You can also try planting some flowers that Hummingbirds are attracted to. They especially love the colour red and long tubular shaped flowers. Keeping your garden pesticide free can also help out all bird and insect populations!

Hummingbirds are also attracted to moving water. Try adding a mister or bubbler to your bird bath! Check them out HERE
