Hummingbirds eat about every ten minutes and their diet is not made up entirely of nectar. They spend more than 25% of their time foraging for small spiders and insects to obtain essential amino acids and other nutrients.

Hummingbirds are deceptively fast. They often seem to explode away from a feeder like a dragster. They typically fly at 48-72km/h, but can fly up to 96 km/h. They can even hover and are the only birds able to regularly fly backwards and even occasionally upside down. They can do this because of an extremely mobile shoulder joint.

Ruby-throated Hummingbirds are Manitoba's only species of Hummingbird. We're lucky to have them visit for about 4 months of the year. Attracting Hummingbirds within the city limits can be a challenge, you may only see them on their journey further north or south when they stop for snacks in your yard. If you want to entice them to your yard try hanging a Hummingbird feeder but keep in mind the feeder must be cleaned and refreshed every 3-5 days. Bacteria growth in the nectar can be lethal to Hummingbirds. You can make your own nectar at home! 1 part sugar to 4 parts water, bring to a boil, cool and serve. White table sugar is best and no food colouring.

Hummingbird Feeders are high maintenance feeders and must be kept clean and fresh. Please wash and replace nectar every 3-5 days.

If this is something you can't keep up with, try planting some flowers that Hummingbirds love! Find a list HERE
